The ups and downs of moving offices

Robert Gould · 01 Oct

On Monday 20th August, the London Perkboxers began their first day at a brand new office in Finsbury Square, Moorgate. After the Sheffield team moved to swanky new premises back in May, at last it was our turn!

This is my third #PBHQ in as many years, making me an absolute dinosaur by Perkbox standards. It is also, without a doubt, the finest one I’ve seen yet...

The ups

A helping hand

You know a company has a healthy culture when staff volunteer on a Saturday to make their new office look beautiful.

‘When I got here in the morning, I had no idea how we we’re going to unpack all the boxes,' Office Manager Shona tells me, ‘Luckily, loads of people turned up to help. It was exhausting – but so much fun. And nothing went wrong!’

Designer labels

Glowing with pride, Shona couldn’t resist dropping in a compliment the people from the removal company paid her labelling skills: ‘We put labels on all the furniture we wanted to take with us, and they said, “You guys are the best at labelling things.” I had to text Maddie and tell her!’

A true career high for our Shona.

The downs

Wifi woes

‘I thought it would be like, when you move house and the wifi moves over the next day,’ Shona admits. ‘It was not like that.’ To her surprise and horror, she discovered it can take two to three months to get your wifi set up when moving business premises.

With only two months notice, we just about pulled it off in time. Still, an important warning to any company planning their own office move!

The ghost of Bloomberg

Before Perkbox swooped in, the space was formerly a Bloomberg TV studio. That sounds cool, but converting a studio into an office is trickier than you might think.

Due to the heat of the studio lights that once stood here, the sprinklers were designed to detect a much higher heat threshold than your average sprinkler. Until we can install more sensitive sprinklers, we are legally banned from using toasters here.

Bear in mind, a huge number of Perkboxers are millennials subsiding on a diet of avocado toast. This has been a hard time for us.
