10 ways to replace temporary happiness with long-term satisfaction at work

Your career takes up a good amount of your time. It can also contribute to a great amount of stress.

As an employer, how do you motivate your employees to be efficient and highly productive without experiencing burnout?

We live in a society where people find happiness in material things: a fast-food cheeseburger, a new sports car, a designer handbag. Some companies give cash bonuses, extended holidays or a nice watch after 15 years of service.

Of course, these rewards usually don’t go unappreciated – anybody in their right mind would find it difficult to turn down a well-earned treat! But do they really contribute to overall happiness at work in the long term? The answer is probably no. Research has shown that happiness at work is more closely linked with feelings of being in control, experiencing the satisfaction of ticking points off your to do list and feeling as though your work is valued by your colleagues. Autonomy, purpose and recognition.

All sound a bit fluffy? Let us help you put it into practice. All it requires is for you to take 20 minutes a day to focus on YOU. If you are an employer, encourage your employees to take time out of their day to focus on themselves and recharge. You’ll see a rise in levels of productivity and, ultimately, profitability of your business.

1. Meditation

Start out by spending a few minutes each day completely clearing your mind of any thoughts. It’s a lot harder than it sounds! Focus on your breathing, relaxation and concentrating on clearing all thoughts. Try to increase your time spent meditating to 20 minutes a day. It will have a major impact on your stress levels.

2. Yoga

Yoga combines thoughtful breathing and physical movement with your body. It helps you tune into your body which is very important to overall wellness. Check out Grokker, our wellness platform, for creative ideas.

3. Self-hypnosis

Hypnosis is similar to meditation and brings about a highly focused state of mind. It can help re-program your subconscious mind to let go of negative thoughts and limiting beliefs.

4. Be Thankful

Find something each and every day to be thankful for. Oh, and write it down.

5. Law of Attraction

Like attracts like. When you focus on the positive, you get positive things in return. The Law of Attraction is powerful – tell the universe what you want, ask for it everyday and allow it to come into your life.

6. Connect with Nature

Go for a walk, run, or hike. Go to a nearby park and take in the scenery. Whatever you’re into, breathe in the fresh air, raise your heart rate and appreciate the world we live in.

7. Eat Healthy

Unhealthy foods might taste good in the moment, but over time they can do some serious damage to your body – it’s that temporary happiness thing again. Please believe us when we say it is never too late to turn your eating habits around. Eating whole foods in moderation can have a profound effect on your overall wellness.

8. Disconnect from Electronics

For just 20 minutes a day, turn off your computer, phone, tablet. Emails can wait! Phone calls can go to voicemail. Texts do not have to be immediately returned.

9. Listen to Musics

Music can reduce your heart rate, clear your mind and reduce anxiety.

10. Whole Body Relaxation

Close your eyes. Start at your head and slowly working down your body to your toes, focus on each body part relaxing, becoming more deeply relaxed.
Deep, everlasting joy carries a lot more value than temporary happiness. If we invest just a little bit of time everyday in seeking happiness and joy from within ourselves and not from tangible objects, we would be much happier.
