    Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras began in 1978 when a small group of gay and lesbian activists, the Gay Solidarity Group, held a day of events in Sydney to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture and protest discrimination.

The violent backlash they faced only fuelled the movement, bringing national attention to gay rights.

By 1981, the event had grown so popular it was moved to the summer. It’s now one of the biggest and most celebrated LGBTQ+ festivals in the world.
