Introduction

Vetnique is a vet founded pet health company with a clear purpose: to help pets and their families thrive and lead happier, healthier lives. Home of YuMOVE, the UK's leading vet-recommended joint supplement brand, they create science-backed products for the pet parents who treat their animals as part of the family.

That same care for the pets & pet owners they serve extends to the people inside the business. With just over 160 team members spread across the UK, Vetnique has a hybrid working model and culture they are genuinely proud of, the People team at Vetnique works hard to make sure every team member feels valued, day to day and when it matters most.

Jenifer Westwood, People Advisor, has been with the business for five and a half years and is at the heart of the people team. She picked up the Perkbox account in her first few weeks in the people team, and spotted how much more they could do with it, and has been building on it ever since.

Nearly 10 years since launching, Perkbox is Vetnique's core benefit, and the numbers show it. A 98% activation rate and 97% engagement rate. £41,557 saved by employees in the last 12 months. 1,603 recognitions sent, and all linked to company values.

The challenge: keeping a dispersed workforce connected

Like many businesses, Vetnique doesn't have everyone in one room. People work remotely, across different cities, and are often out of the office for meetings. That makes the everyday, in-person recognition harder to deliver consistently.

Vetnique has strong company values and are passionate about ensuring that their people live them, not just read them on a wall. The team wanted recognition to feel real and regular, not reserved for quarterly reviews or big milestones.

Before embedding Perkbox more deeply, there were signs of inconsistency. Managers were buying vouchers separately. Recognition happened in different ways across the business. There was no single, unified process.

"In an ideal world, everybody would be in one place and we'd be able to collaborate and say thank you in person," says Jenifer.
"But we know that a hybrid model is the future for business and are very supportive of this. What Perkbox does is enable people to say thank you in the moment, no matter where they are, and everyone can see it and be part of our culture of thank you!

The solution: a tiered recognition programme built around values

Vetnique didn't just switch Perkbox on and leave it there. They built a recognition programme around it.

At the heart of it is a tiered system. Kudos are peer-to-peer, non-monetary shoutouts open to everyone. Anyone can recognise anyone, regardless of team or seniority. Then there are spot rewards: silver, gold and platinum, each with a monetary value ranging from £30 to £150. These recognise bigger wins and going above and beyond.

"You can't put something on the Perkbox platform unless you link it to a value" says Jenifer. "It's always constantly in people's minds and you can hear the conversations around it. It becomes part of our Vetnique vocabulary."

The value of those rewards goes beyond the workplace too.

"The values for the rewards vary from £30 to £150 — quite small in certain respects," she says. "But you're thinking, my work is being recognised, and that means a takeaway with my family at the weekend. It helps build that balance. Being able to have a positive connection to things that happened at work, outside of work — that's so important."

Managers play an important role too. They have access to spot rewards, giving them the autonomy to recognise their teams and other teams in the moment. Cross-functional recognition matters to Vetnique, and the platform makes it easy.

The result is a recognition feed that tells a story about the company's culture every single day.

Helping their employees in and out of work

Recognition is only part of what Vetnique uses Perkbox for.

Wellbeing is built into how managers lead their teams. During onboarding, managers are briefed on every benefit available, including Wellbeing and EAP, so they can point their teams in the right direction. The goal is to make support easy to find.

"We want people to feel psychologically safe," says Jenifer. "Knowing where they can get help without it having to be this big conversation. It just becomes part of the everyday."

Perks and savings matter too. Jenifer runs regular internal newsletters that spotlight different benefits, often tying them to awareness days or seasonal moments.

"Anything we can do to alleviate financial pressure, even in a small way, is really important," she says.

The Perkbox marketing materials make her job easier too. She uses Perkbox content directly for internal comms, saving time and making sure employees are always hearing about what's available to them.

The results: culture you can see

Their stats speak for themselves, but numbers only tell half the story.

The savings conversations happen organically now. Team members swap tips with each other. Jenifer recalls one individual who saved on a UK holiday and used a Gousto voucher for meals while they were away, getting the whole thing for under £200. That kind of thing spreads.

The recognition feed has become a barometer of culture where Jenifer can open it and see something real.

"There's a whole feed of people saying thank you to each other. For me, that is culture. It's there, it's visible, it's tangible."

HR can be tough at times. Lots of hard conversations, lots of work that happens behind the scenes. Perkbox gives Jenifer something she can point to.

"You can see the good that's coming from this and you can see the difference that you're making."

Proving the value of Perkbox to senior leaders has never been a challenge. With engagement and savings figures that speak for themselves, the conversation quickly moves from "should we renew?" to "how many years do we want to do it for?"

A true partnership

Vetnique has been a Perkbox customer for nearly 10 years.

"I see Perkbox as an extension of our business," says Jenifer. "You've evolved with us. Your values match our values. If you've spent 10 years building something that works, why would you walk away from it?"

Part of what makes it work is the relationship. Jenifer is open about the fact that her Client Success Manager makes her job easier, sending ideas, roundups and resources that Jenifer can put straight to use.

"I'll send out emails that are richly written from content you've sent me, and people are like, I love that," she says. "The time it takes to interpret it is tiny. The value that comes out is huge."

Looking ahead, Vetnique is focused on deepening what they already do well, bringing more benefits under one platform as the business grows, and continuing to build on a recognition culture that's already delivering.

Jenifer's top tip for other Perkbox customers

"Don't think of it as just a benefit you've got. It has to become part of the everyday conversation. The more you use it and embed it, the more people are going to use it and embed it and really make it part of your culture.
If you're going to have a partnership with a platform of this size and what it can offer, it has to be a partnership. It can't just sit there. There's so much you can do, and that shows in the stats."
