Positive progress towards Great Place to Work certification

About Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is a local NHS Trust providing compassionate, expert care for more than half a million people every year.

Behind that care is a workforce of over 9,000, spread across hospital sites in Pontefract, Dewsbury and Pinderfields.

The Trust set out to build a workplace culture where wellbeing, recognition and inclusion are part of everyday life. They believe that when staff feel supported and valued, the experience for patients improves too.

The challenge

With around 9,600 people delivering care across three hospital sites, the scale alone made it difficult to support everyone properly. Add in the ongoing impact of the pandemic and the pressure of rising living costs, and it was clear the strain on staff was growing.

The Trust wanted to build on the support they already had in place. That meant improving wellbeing, recognition and engagement in ways people could feel day to day.

The aim was to create a working environment where people are supported, valued and able to thrive in their roles, while staying true to a bigger ambition of being a great place to work and a great place to receive care.

The solution

The Trust took a step back to review its people strategy and shape a more joined-up approach to wellbeing, reward and communication. The goals were clear and practical: creating an inclusive and attractive place to work, improving wellbeing and satisfaction across departments, and making sure its values of High Standards, Caring, Improving and Respect were reflected in the employee experience.

To help bring that strategy to life, the Trust wanted to introduce a single platform for employee wellbeing, benefits and engagement. This gave staff one clear place to access support, recognition and savings – keeping things simple and accessible.

The Trust focused on making support easier to find and understand, updating how wellbeing was communicated internally, and running campaigns that helped staff save on everyday essentials. The platform helped make initiatives more visible, which boosted engagement across the whole workforce.

Having everything in one place made it easier to bring those values into everyday working life, while raising awareness of the support already available to staff.

The result

The Trust’s focus on engagement and wellbeing has led to real, visible change. Employees are more aware of the support available to them, engagement initiatives are seeing higher take-up, and recognition is happening more consistently across teams.

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust is closing in on being recognised as a Great Place to Work, with their employee benefits platform at the heart of its approach to wellbeing.
