Employee Assistance Programme FAQs
What is an EAP?
An EAP is an employee benefit offering a network of support services and tools to help enhance employee wellbeing. With Perkbox, your EAP can encompass a range of valuable resources, including access to counselling and 24/7 clinical support.
By partnering with a dedicated EAP provider like Perkbox, employers can provide a proactive solution to navigating personal and work-related challenges, helping employees stay well and present at work.
How does an Employee Assistance Programme work?
An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provides employees with access to a network of support services and tools to improve their mental health and wellbeing. With Perkbox's EAP scheme, staff can benefit from confidential access to fully qualified counsellors and support specialists to discuss any emotional, personal, or work-related issues – 24/7, 365 days a year.
Why do I need an Employee Assistance Programme?
Dealing with personal or work-related issues can take a huge toll on the wellbeing of your workforce, and can impact productivity, performance, and attendance. In fact, a staggering 76% of employees have taken a stress-related absence in the last year alone (CIPD 2023).
Our EAP offers proactive, preventative support throughout life's challenges, helping employees stay present in the workplace without compromising their wellbeing.
What happens when employees first contact the service?
When employees initially speak to us via the 24/7 helpline, a member of the EAP team will outline the confidentiality policy, take your employees’ details and ask a set series of questions that all clients accessing the service are asked. This will include some questions about any risk.
This enables the team to triage the call to best support your employee and ensure they are provided with the most appropriate support pathway.
The team will then look to immediately book them in with one of the counsellors/psychotherapists for an initial session to see how they can assist.
For clients who would like to access advice, in-the-moment support or information the team will offer this at point of contact or arrange for a counsellor to call back that day.
What kind of therapy/support will my employees receive?
This will be informed by the service level agreement that is in place with the employer and the assessment of the counsellor who provides the initial counselling session. This will be decided in collaboration with the employee.
We have a range of support options including online resources and access to counselling sessions. Our counsellors have a wide range of therapeutic modalities and employees are triaged to the counsellor who best meets their presenting needs.
Is an EAP mandatory in the UK?
No, Employee Assistance Programme benefits are not required in the UK. However, offering EAP support is vital for businesses to help reduce employee absenteeism, and show your employees that you value them as individuals, as well as for their contributions within your organisation.
Is an EAP a taxable benefit in the UK?
Perkbox is not able to provide tax advice and would recommend seeking advice specific to your situation or organisation. For specific questions in relation to tax, NICs and how to report this, independent tax and/or legal advice should be sought.
How long will employees have to wait for appointments?
Employees will be offered an initial appointment within 5 working days following their first contact with our service. This is subject to your own availability, and we will always strive to accommodate any days, times, therapist gender and language requirements that they may have.
Not all clients require access to structured counselling, and your employees may find that the in-the-moment support they receive on the day, or relevant signposting or access to our psychoeducation materials may be most useful to them at that time.
Can employees use the service if they are already seeing a counsellor or other mental health professional?
If an employee is currently engaged in counselling with another service, we would not commence additional counselling with ourselves. If they have a diagnosis of another more complex mental health condition, such as psychosis or personality disorder, this does not always result in them being unable to have contact with the service as we do not have an exclusion criterion. In such circumstances this would be explored with our clinicians and we may routinely contact other relevant professionals involved in their care to obtain their opinion as to whether our therapy services are suitable.
