About West Brom Building Society

West Brom Building Society is a UK-based mutual organisation supporting homeownership and savings across the Midlands and Wales. With over 730 colleagues spread across a central head office and 34 branches, the West Brom is committed to creating a strong, people-first culture. They’ve been serving their customers for over 175 years, building a legacy of trust and care.

Their purpose is clear: to help people achieve financial security through homeownership

The Challenge

Despite having a strong workplace culture — and even bagging a spot on The Sunday Times Best Places to Work 2025 list — the West Brom annual employee survey revealed recognition was scoring lower than other categories.

They had a manual shout-out system on their intranet, but it lacked visibility and didn’t allow for meaningful rewards. A separate recognition budget existed, but the admin-heavy process (buying a gift and claiming it back) meant it was rarely used. The result: there were inconsistencies across teams and missed opportunities to celebrate great work.

The Solution

West Brom Building Society partnered with Perkbox to build a more visible, consistent and rewarding recognition culture

They chose Perkbox for its simplicity, integrated rewards and the bonus of everyday savings. Unlike other platforms that required paid add-ons, Perkbox delivered everything in one simple package — helping the West Brom offer perks, rewards and wellbeing tools from a single app

Key features used

  • Celebration with peer-to-peer recognition
  • Flexi points and rewards
  • Discounts
  • Admin tools for reward budget control
  • Azure integration for seamless rollout

A dream launch

West Brom Building Society launch was nothing short of gold standard. With the support of their dedicated recognition champions from across different business areas, they rolled out Perkbox with:

  • Team meetings led by champions to tell the story
  • A sneak preview stand at their internal Benefits Day
  • Society-wide comms, including desk drops and posters
  • Multi-location comms to reach all 34 branches
  • QR codes on every desk and screen

Recognition champions across teams played a huge part in the launch's success — they helped bring the message to life across every team, making it feel more personal and less top-down.

The result:

  • 94% activation rate within the first month
  • 86% engagement in the first week
  • 816 recognitions sent within the first 4 months
  • £3,340 saved by colleagues through perks within the first 4 months
"We had QR codes on every desk, posters around the building, and even Krispy Kremes to get people over to our launch. You couldn’t miss it — and that’s exactly what we wanted.” – Daniella Tempest, Digital Learning Specialist

Culture-wide Impact

Recognition became a daily habit, not a forgotten initiative.

  • Champions now share weekly perk roundups with their teams
  • A monthly newsletter highlights savings, shout-out stats, and rewards gifted
  • Engagement with recognition doubled
“You can see through the number of shout-outs that people are using the system… we went from an average of 100 a month to over 400 within two months. So that just proves that people are engaging with it and using it.”  – Daniella Tempest, Digital Learning Specialist

Favourite features

  • Tesco discounts top the list for Daniella and many others
  • Savings tracker builds long-term engagement
  • On-the-spot recognition is now fast and frictionless
"You don’t have to plan in advance. You can literally be stood in Tesco, or many other supermarkets and shops that most people commonly use, open the app, and save straightaway. It’s just so easy to use." – Daniella Tempest, Digital Learning Specialist

Ongoing value

West Brom Building Society are now using Perkbox for Society-wide awards, with nominations and shortlists all handled through Celebration. They’re also feeding into Perkbox’s product roadmap with ideas for platform evolution.

“We’re not just using it day-to-day — we’re building bigger campaigns around it. And it’s great to know the Perkbox team listens to our feedback and actually acts on it.” – Daniella Tempest, Digital Learning Specialist

What’s next?

  • Society-wide awards event in 2026
  • Deeper comms integration with ongoing internal campaigns
  • More visibility for reward points and savings to reinforce daily use
