What is employee recognition?
Employee recognition is when a company acknowledges its staff for great work. Its goal is to encourage and reinforce behaviour that helps the business reach its goals, or is in line with the businesses’ values or vision. It can also be a major driving factor in employee attraction and retention.
You'll definitely recognise the questions: ‘’Are you hard-working? Do you go above and beyond? Great team player…?’’ Countless job offers start the same way, and set the tone for the rest of your working relationship. We all know that hard work is appreciated - it’s a given - but is it also rewarded and recognised in the right way?
We’re not talking about salary here, but the way your company goes about recognising and rewarding employee effort and exceptional achievements. Oh, and the fact that they dedicate a large part of their daily lives to your business!

The key to successful recognition at work
Recognition might sound easier than it is. It’s not just compliments and cards. But with the right systems in place, it becomes natural and effortless, although it's crucial to understand what successful recognition looks like - and what it isn't.
Recognition should be delivered in a way that is:
- Meaningful: make clear what you’re actually giving recognition for, so the employee can reflect on this and know what they should be proud of
- Timely: give recognition when it's still relevant. It's never too late for a compliment, but it's better to do it right after a project than leaving it until the Christmas party in six months. Don't make your employees wonder when they'll finally get praise for great work
- Personal: Avoid using a generic-sounding message - take your time and personalise it. Likewise, try to make any reward meaningful to the employee as well.
- Value-oriented: It’s not just about crushing numbers or completing a project - also give praise when you see an employee acting according to company values, or being a great example for their peers. This way, you can bring your company values to life through recognition.

What does recognition in the workplace look like in action?
So, what are we talking about here? A round of applause? A cake with their name on it? A day off?
There’s no one answer to the question of how you should reward your employees. They have the answers. It very much depends on what they value, what kind of work was delivered or what actions they took. Here are some examples of what employee recognition can look like in real life.
Give compliments and positive feedback
- Before a project, explain why you assign it to someone, based on their strengths. It's nice to reinforce this and show that you remember what an individual is good at
- During a project or work day, notice when employees are going the extra mile or are helping others perform. Point out to them that you see it, and that you appreciate it.
- Afterwards, you should always include positive feedback in your evaluation. It's just as important as ‘’negative’’ feedback (or constructive criticism), because it encourages them to keep repeating the good things.
Privately or publicly celebrating the employee
Maybe you have lunch together, or make a toast to them during your after-work drinks on a Friday. Perhaps you stop by their desk or send them a message on Slack to compliment them. Whether it’s done privately or publicly depends on what’s been done, and perhaps what you think the employee prefers. Either way, ensure you’re making a real effort.
Employees complimenting each other
We can't overlook how important it is that our direct colleagues compliment us, not only our managers. Peer-to-peer recognition is a core part of building a strong culture in the workplace.
